Background of the Study

The rapid expansion of social media has transformed the way health information is shared and accessed. WhatsApp, as one of the most widely used messaging platforms, has become a key channel for health education, allowing real-time discussions, question-and-answer sessions, and information dissemination among users (WHO, 2024). In Nigeria, including Jigawa State, WhatsApp groups have been utilized for community health education, disease prevention campaigns, and patient support networks (Ibrahim & Yusuf, 2024).

Despite the growing reliance on WhatsApp for health communication, concerns remain regarding misinformation, selective engagement, and the credibility of shared content. This study investigates the role of WhatsApp groups in the dissemination of health education in Jigawa State, assessing their effectiveness and potential challenges.

Statement of the Problem

Access to accurate health information is a challenge in Jigawa State, particularly in rural areas where healthcare services are limited (Abubakar & Hassan, 2024). While WhatsApp groups provide a means for health education, there is a lack of empirical data on their effectiveness in promoting knowledge and behavior change.

This study evaluates the extent to which WhatsApp groups contribute to health education dissemination, identifying factors that enhance or hinder their effectiveness in Jigawa State.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the extent of health education dissemination through WhatsApp groups in Jigawa State.
  2. To evaluate the effectiveness of WhatsApp groups in improving health knowledge and practices.
  3. To identify the challenges associated with using WhatsApp for health education.

Research Questions

  1. How are WhatsApp groups used for health education dissemination in Jigawa State?
  2. How effective are WhatsApp groups in improving health knowledge and behavior?
  3. What challenges affect the use of WhatsApp for health education?

Research Hypotheses

  1. WhatsApp groups have no significant impact on health education dissemination.
  2. There is no significant relationship between WhatsApp group participation and health knowledge improvement.
  3. Challenges associated with WhatsApp do not significantly affect health education outcomes.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study focuses on WhatsApp group users engaged in health education discussions in Jigawa State. Limitations include variations in internet access, misinformation risks, and participant engagement levels.
